Come Follow Me 44: Doctrine and Covenants 124

Come, Follow Me Lesson 44: Doctrine and Covenants 124 Introduction: What blessings does the Lord offer you? What blessings have you been desirous to receive? Which blessings have you accepted? The Saints drained the swamp! “So they drained the swamp and drafted a charter for a new city, which they named Nauvoo.” They had a vision of what it could be come. They had faith. The Lord blessed Joseph with a sense of urgency. Why was it so important right then that a temple be built and ordinances be performed? How can these feelings of faith and urgency bless the forward growth of this latter-day work in our day? What is the Lord’s most beautiful work (See D&C 124:55)? In Illinois the people had rest from persecution; they were welcomed and respected (at the beginning at least). Many in Commerce came down with malaria from the mosquito infested land. Joseph and Wilford Woodruff went through the camp giving healing blessings. Elijah Fordham miraculously healed. He joined the healing...

Come Follow Me 43: Doctrine and Covenants 121-123

Come, Follow Me Lesson 43: Doctrine and Covenants 121-123 Introduction: How does it make you feel to know that God will be with His faithful saints forever and ever (see D&C 121:1, 33; 122:9)? D&C 121 How can we access the powers of heaven (see D&C 121:45-46)? How can we use our influence for good (see D&C 121:41-43)? Have you ever felt abandoned like Joseph did (See D&C 121:1-6)? Do you feel the Savior’s love for you when you read His responses to Joseph’s petition (see D&C 121:7-10)? D&C 122 How does it make you feel to know that Jesus knows your suffering? He’s been there. He suffered it all for you beforehand, so that He can help and succor you. Why is it important for us to understand that Jesus descended below all things? What have you learned about Joseph? What are you learning about yourself? Do you understand that the bad things that happen around you and to you can work together for your good and God’s glory? Do you understand that J...

Come Follow Me 42: Doctrine and Covenants 115-120

Come, Follow Me Lesson 42: Doctrine and Covenants 115-120 Introduction: Are you looking for answers from the Lord, or are you looking for the Lord to validate your own thinking? Do you dwell on your losses or the blessings that the Lord has set before you? The Saints had to leave the Kirtland Temple and their homes behind and the Church’s largest stake at the time. There was opposition from without and from within. The three witnesses turned against Joseph, and so had four of the apostles, and some of the Seventy. The faithful saints started to build again in Far west and made plans for a new temple. What can we learn from that when we experience losses in our own lives? Four remarkable men were called to be the new apostles (see D&C 118:6): John Taylor, John E. Page, Wilford Woodruff, and Willard Richards. Doing the Lord’s work doesn’t mean that there won’t be setbacks, but when you fall, He will help you rise again. The things you have to give up will become sacred sacri...

Come Follow Me 41: Doctrine and Covenants 111-114

Come, Follow Me Lesson 41: Doctrine and Covenants 111-114 Introduction: How do you hold onto peace from the Savior in a world of commotion? The Saints experienced a spiritual high with the dedication of the Kirtland Temple. Trials from without and within soon followed How can we keep trials from breaking our peace, faith, and testimony? How does preaching the gospel protect and strengthen you (See D&C 112:28)? It’s important for us to sustain and support the prophet and our fellow saints and citizens (see 112:15). It’s important that I keep preparing and keep serving. Instead of being overly concerned about discomfort from present trials, I should be looking forward in faith for the coming [next] blessings (112:13). Personal 111: How does debt weigh us down? Why is it important to recognize all the other treasures the Lord has given us (see D&C 111:10)? What is of most value to the Lord (vs 2)? How does obedience and keeping the commandments turn us in...

Come Follow Me 40: Doctrine and Covenants 109-110

Come, Follow Me Lesson 40: Doctrine and Covenants 109-110 Elder Bednar wants us to be familiar with the following scriptures, to ponder and study them, and to recognize how they impact you and your family: D&C 109:24-28: 24 We ask thee, Holy Father, to establish the people that shall worship, and honorably hold a name and standing in this thy house, to all generations and for eternity; 25 That no weapon formed against them shall prosper; that he who diggeth a pit for them shall fall into the same himself; 26 That no combination of wickedness shall have power to rise up and prevail over thy people upon whom thy name shall be put in this house; 27 And if any people shall rise against this people, that thine anger be kindled against them; 28 And if they shall smite this people thou wilt smite them; thou wilt fight for thy people as thou didst in the day of battle, that they may be delivered from t...
