Come Follow Me 42: Doctrine and Covenants 115-120
Come, Follow Me Lesson 42: Doctrine and Covenants 115-120
Introduction:
Are you looking for answers from the Lord, or are you looking for the Lord to validate your own thinking?
Do you dwell on your losses or the blessings that the Lord has set before you?
The Saints had to leave the Kirtland Temple and their homes behind and the Church’s largest stake at the time. There was opposition from without and from within. The three witnesses turned against Joseph, and so had four of the apostles, and some of the Seventy.
The faithful saints
started to build again in Far west and made plans for a new temple.
What can we learn from that when we experience losses in
our own lives? Four remarkable men were called to be the new apostles
(see D&C 118:6): John Taylor, John E. Page, Wilford Woodruff, and
Willard Richards.
Doing the Lord’s work doesn’t mean that there won’t be setbacks, but when you fall, He will help you rise again. The things you have to give up will become sacred sacrifices to the Lord… even more sacred than increase (see D&C 117:13).
Do you ever become disillusioned by financial losses?
Joseph and Sidney were welcome by Missouri saints with open arms and warm hearts. Are we receiving those who have had to flee their homes in the same manner?
William W. Phelps and John Whitmer were both excommunicated. Sad. Then David Whitmer and Oliver Cowdery were also excommunicated.
In Adam-ondi-Ahman, all the prophets who have held keys shall meet with the Lord. Before the Second Coming, Adam will deliver up all the keys to the Lord, except retain his place as the head of the human family.
Do I covet that which is but the drop, and neglect the more weighty matters? Are the more weighty matters to attend to the needs of the Saints?
D&C 115
Personal
Why is the Church’s name so important to the
Lord? Why is important that the world know it’s name?
Family
How can I personally arise and shine forth so that I am a member that invites others to Come and See and Come unto Christ?
How can I pattern my
own life after the instructions the saints received to commence the
building of a new temple (See D&C 115:8-12).
D&C
116: Spring Hill is the location of Adam-ondi-Ahman
Why was it hard for William Marks and Newel K. Whitney to leave Kirtland?
When others take away from us what we see as rightfully belonging to us, are we coveting? Do we have need to repent? Are we coveting a drop, when the Lord has so much in store for us ahead?
How do the financial injustices we’ve received compare to the blessings of the spirit and the financial prosperity the Lord has given us?
How can we more
fully come to Zion?
William Marks called as a stake
president. Newel K. Whitney called as a Bishop.
They gave
up much to help church pay down debts and to building up the Church
in yet a new place.
Oliver Granger was called to remain in Kirtland and settle Church’s finances. He did so with integrity, but recovered very little. The Lord was pleased with his sacrifices.
What does it mean to you that the Lord will overthrow the moneychangers in His own due time (see D&C 117:16)?
See Matt 6:33
D&C 118
How does the Lord
feel about missionary work (see D&C 118: 3)? What blessings have
you seen in your own family because of missionary work, yours or
other members?
Newly called apostles: John Taylor, John
E. Page, Wilford Woodruff, and Willard Richards (see vs 6).
D&C 119-120 (finished last week’s reading today, 19 Oct 2021)
How would our land be transformed if everyone paid tithing (see Malachi 3:8-12)?
“The money offered is calculable, the blessings are not.”
Children’s song: I Sant to Give the Lord My Tenth
How can we be
living in Zion right now (see D&C 119:6)?
Who besides the
First Presidency, Quorom of the Twelve, and the Presiding Bishopric
is on the council over tithing for the Church (see D&C 120)?
Note written on 17 Oct: Sometimes the best way to defend your honor is to allow others to be dishonorable. The Lord has this sorted out. (Concerning car accident. God always provides for our needs and wants.)
