Come Follow Me 46: Doctrine and Covenants 129-132
Come, Follow Me Lesson 46: Doctrine and Covenants 129-132
Introduction:
Can
you teach the gospel in such a way that those who have never been
introduced to it can understand it? Is there room in your teaching
for the Holy Ghost to be the main Teacher?
What does it mean to
you to understand that Jesus is a person just like you?
What
does it mean to you to understand that the relationships you have
here on earth will continue in heaven (See D&C 130:1-2)? What
does it mean to you to know that through the atonement of Jesus
Christ, and the sealing powers within His gospel and His priesthood,
that your family relationships can be eternal (see D&C 130:19)?
We may all be asked to make sacrifices that will stretch us or break us. What is necessary for us to have in order to be able to follow the Lord and do as He commands us? How does D&C 132:50 strengthen your understanding of the Lord’s love for you?
Doctrine and Covenants 130-131 or a compilation of notes written by William Clay that contain gospel truths that were taught by Joseph Smith.
How do this sections help you answer the following questions: What do I learn about God? What do I learn about the life after mortality? How does this knowledge affect my life?
William Clayton was was a secretary of Joseph Smith and came to know him intimately, strengths and faults. He joyed in recording gospel truths and gems taught by the prophet. Many of his writings became the basis for these sections of the Doctrine and Covenants. He rejoiced in how Joseph made heaven and heavenly blessings be felt as real and tangible truths.

Patterns
of the Shopper
1. Wise shoppers study their options thoroughly before making a selection. Focus on quality and durability. They want the best.
2. Some shoppers look for bargains
3. Others may splurge
They may learn later that their choice did not endure well.
4. Others cast aside their personal integrity and steal what they want. Shoplifters.
Apply patterns of the shopper to the topic of marriage.
We can choose marriage of the highest quality or a lesser type that will not endure. Or they can choose neither and brazenly steal what they want as marital shoplifters.
Elder Nelson
declared, as an apostle of the Lord, that marriage between a man and
a woman is sacred. It is ordained of God. He asserted the virtue of a
temple marriage. “It is the highest and most enduring type of
marriage that our Creator can offer to His children.”
What great truths do we learn in Doctrine and Covenants 131? How important is temple marriage to you?
In D&C 32 we learn more about the Abrahamic Covenant and how Eternal marriage, the New and Everlasting Covenant, is part of that, or even the culmination of it. We are also taught that once we receive or understand a commandment, we are supposed to live it, and that the Lord can give or revoke commandments according to His knowledge and our circumstances at the time.
D&C 32 also testifies that families can be linked together throughout eternity.
Revelations in Context further declares the doctrine that marriages need to be sealed on earth and in heaven by Priesthood authority and the Holy Spirit of promise, in order to continue after the grave.
[From Revelations in Context: In Latter-day Saint belief, the earth is alive with heavenly communication, the angels invested in comforting the burdens of the bereaved.]
Mary Fielding was sealed to Hyrum Smith for eternity; Mercy, her sister, was sealed to Robert Thompson for eternity, and only married to Hyrum for time (10 months).
