Come Follow Me 5: Doctrine and Covenants 6-9

Come, Follow Me Lesson 5: Doctrine and Covenants 6-9

I am impressed with Oliver Cowdery’s thirst for truth, not just for secular knowledge. That’s an admirable trait to have.

Do I want to know the truth, or do I just want others to follow my train of thought?

Do I want to share truth?

Why does sharing truth have to be done by invitation, and not by force?

When Oliver asked the Smith family concerning their son Joseph, the plates, and the heavenly visitations, this was something he wanted to believe. Joseph Sr. and Lucy told Oliver to ask God in prayer.

Are answers received through prayer any less valid that conclusions drawn in labs?

We cannot all be scientists; we cannot all be secular scholars in avenues of study; but we can all study the restored gospel of Jesus Christ, and we can all ask of God if what we are learning about is true. Joseph did this; Oliver did this. They received answers directly from heaven. Revelation isn’t just for apostles and prophets; it’s for all of us.

Oliver desired to help with the work. The Lord prompted him to travel to Harmony to be Joseph’s scribe.

What can we learn about personals revelation from Oliver’s experience?

D&C 6:5-7: We must ask, keep the commandments, serve in the church, and seek for spiritual things.
D&C 8:1: It is important to have faith, honest heart, and believe that you will receive.
D&C 9:7-9 We have to study things out in our own minds and draw our own conclusions; then ask if what we are thinking and feeling is right. If it’s right the Lord will cause our bosom to burn. God knows the thoughts and intents of our hearts. We have to work to receive revelation.
D&C 6:14-17; 22-24: Our minds will be enlightened by the Spirit of truth; peace to mind, God will tell us things that are otherwise unknown. He will tell us in our hearts and minds. (two witnesses) Vs. 15 Remember the answers you have already been given.

Why is it important for us to look unto Christ in every thought?

When we chase after secular ideas and don’t seek learning by study and by faith, it is easy to have our thinking become clouded and to forget the importance of the revelations we’ve received.

D&C 6:18 How can we stand with the prophet faithfully now in our day?

Look to the Lord in every thought; doubt not; fear not.

Do you believe that the Lord cares about your personal desires?

D&C 7:1 What desirest thou?

He will grant us our desires if we ask in faith.

D&C11: Do I have desires to do my best in the Lord’s work?

How do you feel when you receive light and truth from our Father?

Are you overly troubled about the times we live in?

Why did Esther have courage to go before the King on behalf of her people?

Why weren’t the sons of Mosiah afraid to go among the Lamanites and teach them?

(Elder Rasband’s message and Estaer 4; Alma 26:23-31)

What do you need to pray about personally so that you can move forward in faith?
