Come, Follow Me Lesson 36: Doctrine and Covenants 94-97


Lesson Introduction:

The temple is a good place for us to go to receive personal revelation.


How can we place both our home and the temple at the center of our lives?


Ancient prophets and Joseph Smith were commanded to build temples according to the pattern of the Lord, according to His directions.


Why is it important to worship God and to build our lives according to His design for us?


The Tabernacle in the wilderness, the temple in Kirtland, and the Salt Lake Temple were all meant to be in a central position for the people.


Today, even if our temples are not central in our communities, we can make them central in our lives.


Is this why temple are often built on higher ground? (Often temples are build on higher ground so that they are a prominent feature and a reminder to us.)


What do we learn inside our temples? We learn a “divine pattern—a heavenly plan to bring us back into the presence of God. Sacred, eternal ordinances help us build our lives and strengthen our families ‘not after the manner of the world’ but after the pattern God shows us.”


D&C 94 Intro: How are parents the building committee for their homes?


Vs 1: How does temple worship help us in building Zion and strengthening our stake?


What you can do to experience the Lord’s glory and presence more often in Church buildings and everywhere you are?

The Saints had not acted on the commandment to build a house uno the Lord (for five months).


Have you ever resister counsel from the Lord through the Spirit or from His servants? How were you chastened? Were you able to recover what was lost?


Vs. 4: Temples provide necessary preparation and groundwork so that we can prune the Lord’s vineyard. What does that mean?


When the location for the Kirtland temple was determined, “Hyrum Smith, the Prophet’s brother, immediately ran to get a scythe and begin clearing the field. ‘We are preparing to build a house for the Lord,” he said, “and I am determined to be the first at the work’”.


How quick are we to attend the temple when we have the opportunity to do so?


Vs. 8 Why is it important for us to receive power on high?

Vs. 11 What is necessary for us to be doing in order to do what the Lord desires us to do?


Vs. 12 What does this verse tell you concerning those who have fallen away?


Vs. 13-14 How are these verses good instruction for parents? Where can we find the pattern of the Lord for rearing our families?


D&C 96:


Vs. 5 How important is it to the Lord that everyone hears His words?


Vs. 7 We are also descendant of Joseph and partakers of the blessings of the promise made unto his fathers.

Vs. 1-3 The Lord’s love for us is great! Vs. 5-6


Why should the building of Zion be our greatest object? The time is coming that peace will not be found anywhere but within the stakes of Zion.


Vs. 8 How can we be accepted of the Lord? (How does this differ from acceptance from the world?)

Vs. 9 What do these promises mean for us?


Vs. 10-12 Why is our tithing needed to build temples? And why do we need to build temples? (For the salvation of Zion.)


Vs. 13-17 The blessings of having a temple.


Vs. 18- 21, 25, 28 How will we be included in the blessings of Zion through temple building and temple worship?

How do we keep our covenants?


Where is Zion?

How do we build Zion in our homes?

Come, Follow Me Lesson 5: Doctrine and Covenants 6-9   I am impressed with Oliver Cowdery’s thirst for truth, not just for secular knowledge. That’s an admirable trait to have. Do I want to know the truth, or do I just want others to follow my train of thought? Do I want to share truth? Why does sharing truth have to be done by invitation, and not by force? When Oliver asked the Smith family concerning their son Joseph, the plates, and the heavenly visitations, this was something he wanted to believe.
