Come, Follow Me Lesson 29: Doctrine and Covenants 77-80  

Introduction:

Are you paying attention to the words of wisdom that the Lord speaks to you (see 78:2)?

Church leaders continue to meet together to discuss the needs of a growing church: publishing revelations, purchasing lands, using funds, means, and talents to care for the poor (see 78 heading).

In that day, they organized a group called the United Firm, to advance the cause of the Lord (see vs.4). What different entities has the Church developed to advance the cause of the Lord in our day?

As the Lord helps us to take care of the physical needs of each other and the Church, he is actually teaching us about spiritual things and preparing us to receive a place in the spiritual world.

Can you explain how all things are Spiritual with God?

Are you sometimes overwhelmed by all the things that you think you should be doing?


Here’s the Lord’s reassurance, “Be of good cheer, and I will lead you along (vs. 18).

D&C 77 Personal section:

Do you use the techniques that have worked for you previously to gain revelation to receive current guidance?

Joseph continued to rely on James invitation to ask of God (see James 1:5). This was helpful to Joseph and Sidney when they were translating the book of Revelation.

As you continue your own scriptural study, remember to pause and ponder, and ask Heavenly Father “What am I to understand?” and thank Him for the understanding that you gain.


Family section:

Our Heavenly Father created this beautiful world for us, to help us prepare for eternity. Our physical bodies are in the likeness of our spiritual bodies. This is the same for animals as well (see D&C 77:2). Everything on this earth is here for the blessing and growth of God’s children (see D&C 19:16-20).

John ate a book that represents his mission to gather Israel? Do we make our own missions an integral part of us (see vs 14)?

The two prophets that will be raised up to the Jewish nation will be their to prophesy to the Jews after they are gathered and have built the city of Jerusalem in the land of their fathers. How close is it now (see vs. 15)?


D&C 78 Family section

Often we need monetary resources to help us to meet expectations and goals in our work and our service. Money has definitely been required to advance the interests of the Church and many other organizations.

What is the cause of the Church? (Read D&C78:1-7)

How do these verses apply to you in your church callings and family responsibilities?

How can your service advance the cause of the Lord? How can it help you prepare for a place in the celestial world?

Even those this United Firm was disbanded, how do we know that the principles are still being followed and practiced by our Church’s leadership today? Who oversees and gives an accounting of these things today?

Why does the Lord what His church to stand independent above all other creatures? (See vs.14)

How are we still like little children (vs. 17)? Read vs. 17-19)

How do you express your gratitude for your blessings?

How can you work on receiving all things with thankfulness? (See D&C 78:19)

How do we become part of the Church of the Firstborn? (vs. 21)

Family:

When you have been ordained or set apart, and then start fulfilling your assignments, do you feel the power that you have received from the Lord working through you? (D&C 79:1)

Why is it important to declare not just the things we know to be true, but also the thinks that we verily believe to be true? (D&C 80:4)
