Come, Follow Me Lesson 16: Doctrine and Covenants 37-40

D&C 38:30 (read)

The Lord inspires us to know what to do when we pray. He asks us to treasure up these revelations.

  1. How can we treasure up the revelations we receive?

  2. How can treasuring up what the Spirit teaches you help you be prepared so that you do not fear?

The Lord describes His Church with the following words: cause, kingdom, Zion, and work. It is easy for Church members to love the restored doctrine of the gospel of Jesus Christ. But so many of us want something more that we can dedicate our lives to.

  1. How does having a cause, a work, or a mission to perform give you direction and purpose?

  2. How does being involved in the cause of gathering Israel bless your life?

The Lord required His people to make sacrifices. But whatever we sacrifice in following what the Lord asks of us will be far less than what He lays before us.

  1. What does the Lord have to offer us? (Lands of promise, freedom, unity, eternal life)

We, along with the early Saints, have been called to bring forth and establish Zion. (D&C39:13)

  1. Are we doing our part?

  2. How can moving forward with an eye of faith help us attain the blessings the Lord is waiting to give us?

  3. If we could see all the blessings the Lord has in store, would we more eagerly and earnestly follow Him and wait on Him in hopes of attaining the desired results?

  4. Is our eye of faith strong enough to wait on the Lord? If not what can we do to strengthen it?

We, like the early Saints, also need to forsake the cares of the world (D&C 40:2)

  1. Do we recognize when the cares of the world hinder our progress and our devotion to the work of the Lord?

  2. Do we renew our commitment to following the Lord and begin anew each week?

We live in a confusing time, but the Lord’s light still shines brighter than all the darkness of these times?

  1. What are we doing to rend the veil of darkness? (D&C 38:8)

  2. How do we gird up our loins? (vs. 9)

  3. Am I clean? (vs. 10)

  4. There is a gathering going on. Am I choosing for myself to be gathered with the wheat or with the tares? (vs. 12)

  5. Do I recognize that the enemy is combined?

  6. Am I joining myself with the Lord and His servants (the Saints)? Who am I combining myself and my energies with?

The Lord continues to gather scattered Israel through the gospel of Jesus Christ. Our Father has a great plan for all of His children. Their love is shown through Their wisdom and Their grace.

Read D&C 37:4

  1. Will I choose the Lord’s wisdom, or do I know better?

  2. Since we are no longer called to gather to one place, how are we gathering today?

  3. Are you acquiring the faith you need to be gathered? Are you allowing God to prevail in your own life?

We are told in D&C 38:30 that if we are prepared, we shall not fear. We all face many challenges. In your personal gospel study, pause to think about your own challenges and listen for promptings from the Spirit about ways you can prepare for your challenges, so that you won’t be overwhelmed and fearful.

How we treat the poor among us is of utmost importance to the Lord. He loves the pure in heart and He wants us to bless each other’s lives in the same way that He blesses ours.

  1. Do I covet what the Lord has given me, or am I concerned with helping the poor as He has helped me? (D&C 38:16)

If I share now, greater blessings will be in store for me and for them. This applies both to gospel knowledge and spiritual wealth as well as the necessities of life and temporal goods. (vs. 19-20)
