Come Follow Me 12: Doctrine and Covenants 27-28
Come, Follow Me Lesson 12: Doctrine and Covenants 27-28
The Doctrine in Covenants is a great tool whereby we can gain understanding about the order and administration of Christ’s church.
The Lord has called prophets:
In D&C 28:13 the Lord explains to us that in His Church all things must be done in order.
In D& 28:2 He further explains that only one is “appointed to receive commandments and revelations” for the entire church.
Who can receive revelations for the church and for the world?
Why is it important to listen to the words of the living prophet?
Can others receive revelation for the church?
Can others receive revelation in the church?
What is the order for receiving and sharing revelation?
Revelation: What is the order in His Church?
Jesus Christ is the Head of the Church
The current prophet holds the keys which have been given for his dispensation
Those keys are passed on to the next prophet
There is delegation of authority and power
There is safety and protection in following the prophet
(D&C 28:2-7)
The prophet receives revelation for the entire Church and speaks for the entire Church. The prophet is the Lord’s mouthpiece for His Church. Prophet’s hold all the keys that are given for their dispensation.
Oliver was told that he could also receive revelation in his callings to help him to teach, expound, and exhort.
Members underneath our current prophet may also receive personal revelation and revelation for their callings and assignments.
Who can I as a member of Christ’s church receive revelation for?
Usually the revelation that we receive in connection with others is to give us enlightenment to know how to better serve and teach them, but not to command or exact obedience of them.
How did Peter know that Jesus is the Christ? (Matthew 16:16-19)
Heavenly Father revealed it to him by the power of the Holy Ghost.
Jesus said that the Church would be built upon the rock of revelation.
Peter was given the keys of his dispensation and was given the sealing powers.
Sometimes Good People Make Mistakes
Hiram Page believed his was receiving revelation from the Lord, and he needed to be corrected. Because of that correction, we have all more understanding about the Lord’s prophets and safety of doctrine.
Why is it important to the Lord that when someone is in error that they are offered correction privately? (D&28:11)
How can we apply this principle in our home or work environments?
Tell people of their mistakes privately and discuss appropriate alternatives.
Teach true and pure doctrine.
Compliment all the good that you see.
The Importance of the Sacrament
The Lord told us that it doesn’t matter so much what we eat or drink when we partake of the sacrament, by the condition of our worthiness and readiness. (See D&C 27:1-4)
How can we partake of the sacrament with an eye single to the glory of God?
Repent; promise to work on changing inappropriate habits and desires.
Recommit to our covenants and seek to do His will.
Work on having the Spirit with you, and follow that Spirit.
Because the sacrament is a personal and private ordinance in which we are privileged to gain access to the Lord’s atonement, it is important to protect the dignity and the reverence that surround that ordinance.
What things do you do to help you remember the Savior’s sacrifice as you partake of the sacrament?
How do you arm yourself spiritually?
President Ballard says that the small acts that we do collectively work together to fortify and protect us from evil.
D&C 27:15-18
What are you doing to put on each piece of armor?
If we are faithful in putting on our armor and following our Leader, we will be caught up to be with Him.
