Come Follow Me 6: Doctrine and Covenants 10-11
Come, Follow Me Lesson 6: Doctrine and Covenants 10-11
D&C 10
When have you lost something important, and you had to let it go and move on? How has the Lord compensated you?
It’s interesting that Satan tried to thwart God’s work by having the manuscript stolen and the words changed; but God had a plan to thwart Satan’s work way ahead of time and to compensate for what was lost.
God had inspired Nephi to create a second record that covered the same time period as that first record. Then Mormon was also inspired to include both accounts, even though he did not understand why. He said “for a wise purpose” known to the Lord. (Mormon 1:3-7) The Lord also told Joseph and us that this second record would be of great benefit to us, because it would give “greater views upon the gospel” (D&C 10:45).
(It was wisdom in God for us to have these truths. The Lord wanted this new selection translated to benefit the Lamanites and all of us. He covenanted with those of faith in that day that we would have these words in our day.)
The plates of Nephi are more particular to the prophecies, gospel, and doctrine of Christ. It was wisdom in God that we should have this account. The holy prophets and disciples desired that in their prayers, and God granted that to them because of their faith.
Are you ever overly concerned with things that are happening around you that seem to yell that Satan is working hard to thwart the work of God? What does the Lord tell us in Doctrine and Covenant 10:43? (His wisdom is greater than the cunning of the devil. The Lord won’t suffer His work to be destroyed).
Do you have examples of how the Lord’s work as progressed in the midst of attacks, persecution, and unrest?
Satan desires for our faith to be weakened. How can we make sure that does not happen? Like Joseph, we can be “faithful and continue on” in the work God has called us to do (vs. 3). The Lord will always provide a way for us when we follow Him and do his will. (vs. 69 “the gates of hell shall not prevail” against the people of the Lord.)
Continue enduring.
Have you ever experienced great sadness? Have you ever felt like all was lost?
Joseph and Emma lost their beautiful first-born son, and then the plates were also lost. It’s important for us to feel the favor of the Lord, so that we are not lost in grief and despair.
In our Country and throughout the world, Satan has influenced many to not believe there is a God or a devil, good or bad, right or wrong. Why? (He wants to destroy the work of salvation and happiness.
Why is it dangerous to forget that there is a God and that He has a plan for us?
Why is it important to remember your covenants and to recall the words that bind you to the Lord and to your families?
In verses 62 and 63, we learn that the Lord will bring to light His gospel and doctrine and establish His Church.
How does keeping a pray in your heart help you to look to Jesus in every thought?
D&C 11
Hyrum wanted Joseph Smith to seek the Lord’s will for him, and the Lord gladly gave it. But the Lord also wanted Hyrum and all of us to know that we can seek revelation for ourselves.
Read D&C 11:13-14. The Lord will enlighten our minds and fill our souls with joy. This is revelation from God and we should never mistake it for something that our own senses conjured up. The Lord gives this to us to help us recognize truths. In vs. 27, the Lord tells us that we are all called to participate in His great work if we have desires to do so.
Read vs. 21. How does obtaining God’s word help you serve in the Church? How does it help you serve at work and in your family? How does it bring God’s power into your life?
Learn it, live it, know it, love it.
What things did the Lord tell Hyrum to do so that he’d be ready to share the gospel? (D&C11:15-30)
What are the things that modern day prophets have told middle age people especially to work on so that they are ready to serve missions?
Do you recognize the truth that is conveyed by the Spirit? The truth that leads you to do good?
Has your mind been enlightened? Has your soul been filled with joy?
