Come Follow Me 3: Doctrine and Covenants 3: Joseph Smith-History 1:27-65

Come, Follow Me Lesson 3

Joseph Smith learned at a young age that God had a mission for him to perform. He is known as the Prophet of the Restoration and the Prophet of this Dispensation.

Why was one of his first and primary duties to translate The Book of Mormon: Another Testament of Jesus Christ?

What are the primary purposes of the Book of Mormon? Do we value the Book of Mormon?

The Book of Mormon contains the fullness of the everlasting gospel. The Restoration of the Gospel is fulfilling ancient prophecies.

What is the Abrahamic Covenant? (Abraham 2:9-11) How is the restoration of the gospel fulfilling this covenant?

Prophets are not perfect. While Joseph was a valiant young man and a true disciple, he also made mistakes and needed repentance. In spite of his weaknesses the Lord had a great work for him to do.

How can we come to understand the Lord’s plan for us and what our own missions are?
God Has a Work for Me to Do

President Russell M Nelson explains to us, “Ask your Heavenly Father, in the name of Jesus Christ, how He feels about you and your mission here on earth. If you ask with real intent, over time the Spirit will whisper the life-changing true to you…I promise you that when you begin to catch even a glimpse of how your Heavenly Father sees you and what He is counting on you to do for Him, your life will never be the same!”

“When we take part in God’s work, we can expect to face opposition and even persecution, just as the Prophet did. But we can also have faith that the Lord will make us instruments in His hands.”

When have you experienced opposition to something good you’re doing or have decided to do?

What should we do when we feel conflicted in our choices and the will of the Lord for us?

Do we trust that the Lord will answer our prayers again?

What are Jesus’s words to those who suffer persecution for Him and the gospel’s sake?

Has the Lord called you to repent (make changes in your life), before calling you to greater responsibilities and greater blessings?

What did Elijah Restore?

We know that because Elijah returned to earth and restored the sealing power, the end is near.

President Henry B. Eyring said, “It is important to know why the Lord promised to send Elijah. Elijah was a great prophet with great power given him by God. He held the greatest power God gives to His children: he held the sealing power, the power to bind on earth and have it bound in heaven.

Elijah Came to Turn My Heart to My Ancestors

What do the words plant, hearts, and turn suggest in section 2? How can we learn to be blessed by and bless others through the priesthood keys that were restored by Elijah?

We need to grow our families and charity for each family member. We need to nourish and care for each other.

This is not just a revelation for extending our love and the blessings of the gospel to our family members who’ve passed away, but also to those who are still here among us.

In D&C 2 and in Moroni’s instruction to Joseph in his history, we learn the importance of sharing the gospel with our family, both living and dead, and extending the blessings of the covenant.

How can we help turn the hearts of the children to their fathers?

How are we participating in the work of the restoration?

What has the Lord promised us if we do these things?

How is the Lord extending the saints understanding?

Family members’ hearts need to turn to each other, both the living and the dead.

What promises have we made to our fathers?

How is Satan currently trying to stop the work?

Temple closures; attack on family and tithes of family members. He wants us wasted.

What can I do to turn my heat to my ancestors?

Learn about your ancestors. Share what you learn with your family.
Do genealogy. Take your own family names to the temple to do their work.

What can I do to repair relationships with my family?
