Come Follow Me Notes for discussion: JSH 1:26

  1. How is the world we live in like the world during Joseph’s time?

  2. Do you feel like there is a war of words and a tumult of opinions?

  3. What do you do when you are confused by differing views and opinions?

  4. How can we handle disagreements?

We can learn to listen. We can build on common ground. We can allow for agency and freedom of expression.

We can pray to know what is right, and we can receive directions and light. Personal revelation is available to all God’s children through the power of the Holy Ghost, which is a gift from God to all His children.

  1. What prompted Joseph to ask of God?

  2. What do you learn from Joseph’s experience?

  3. What circumstances, directions, and scriptures have you experienced in your own life that have inspired you to ask of God?

  4. Have you received your own witness from God?

  5. How has your live changed because of answers you’ve received?

  6. Should our lives change when we receive answers?

  7. How has the 1st Vision changed your life?

  8. What eternal truths are we in possession of as a result of the 1st Vision

During Joseph’s day there was an unusual excitement about religion. In our day, the excitement is more about religion not being valid, or about being irreligious.

  1. How can we create a good excitement concerning religion?

  2. How can we create a religious excitement that would create unity instead of division?

  3. Why are the 1st two commandments still the most important when we are ministering or inviting others to come to Christ?

  4. Why is it important to build bridges with other Christian churches and other faiths?

  5. Are we ever right when we are arguing or causing contention?

  6. How can we respond when people question our testimony?

Joseph was an obscure boy of 14-years-old, but people were enraged by his testimony, and they told him it was all of the devil.

  1. Have you ever felt persecuted for your beliefs?

Joseph has had many people report and spread information about him that is erroneous and damaging.

  1. Have you ever felt slandered by wrongful information?

  2. How important is it to you to know that God loves you and will bless you according to your needs?

When God appeared to Joseph, he called him by name. He knows us all by name and loves us each as a beloved son or daughter.

  1. Have you ever felt Heavenly Father calling you personally?

  2. Has the love of your own family members helped you live the gospel more fully?

Joseph’s parents’religious convictions and practices planted seeds of faith that made the Restoration possible.

  1. How have your parents help you prepare to follow Christ?

But more than that, the Lord teaches us about the priesthood order, as it was instituted in the days of Adam and restored in our day. Come, Follow Me Lesson 5: Doctrine and Covenants 6-9   I am impressed with Oliver Cowdery’s thirst for truth, not just for secular knowledge. That’s an admirable trait to have. Do I want to know the truth, or do I just want others to follow my train of thought? Do I want to share truth? Why does sharing truth have to be done by invitation, and not by force? When Oliver asked the Smith family concerning their son Joseph, the plates, and the heavenly visitations, this was something he wanted to believe. Joseph Sr. and Lucy told Oliver to ask God in prayer. Are answers received through prayer any less valid that conclusions drawn in labs? We cannot all be scientists; we cannot all be secular scholars in avenues of study; but we can all study the restored gospel of Jesus Christ, and we can all ask of God if what we are learning about is true.
