Who is the Author of the Doctrine and Covenants?
What things does the Lord tell us in Section 1?
Mine authority and my preface (vs. 6)
His words are true and faithful (vs. 37)
The arm of the Lord will be revealed (vs.14)
Hearken and hear His words and the words of the prophet (vs. 14)To whom is the Lord speaking?
Whom is the message for?
What does the Lord want you to know about the Doctrine and Covenants?
The Lord is the author of the
revelations.
The Lord wanted His revelations to be published to
the world.
The Lord wanted to write His own preface.
The
Lord wanted to warn His children all over the world to repent and to
come to His true Church.
The Lord has the authority and gave
His servants power and authority to lay the foundations of this
Church and to bring it out of obscurity.
That authority
continues with His servants today.
His voice of warning to
repent and to establish His everlasting covenant is to everyone.
The
weak and simple will carry the message to kings and rulers.
Power
is given to the Lord’s servants to preach the gospel (sealing power
is given).
How can we help bring the Lord’s church out of obscurity and darkness?
How can we help establish His everlasting covenants? And what are they?
What are some of the themes and purposes the Lord had in given us the Doctrine and Covenants?
The Lord wants us to prepare for
that which is to come.
We need to know that the arm of the Lord
will be revealed. He wants us to trust in Him and retain our faith
and hope.
Jesus knew of the calamities that we would face in
these latter days. (vs. 17)
The Doctrine and Covenants was given to help us through our calamities.
What has the Lord done for us because of current calamities?
He wants us to understand the
Joseph was called as His prophet.
Commandments were given to
Joseph and to the others for their safety.
He wants us to share
the gospel too so that we can invite others to safety.
He wants
us to understand that the words of the prophets will all be
fulfilled.
He speaks to us His purposes in giving us
these revelations, which include the following:
The weak (and humble and obedient) things of the world will come forth and break down the mighty and strong. Our trust needs to be in the Lord and not in man, so that we can come forth as He desires us to do.
Every (faithful) man and woman will have the opportunity to speak in the name of Jesus Christ.
Faith will increase in the earth. (We need to remember that even though there are tumultuous times, the Lord will increase our faith and power, if we put our trust in Him.)
His everlasting covenant will be established.
The fullness of the gospel will be proclaimed by weak and simple to the ends of the earth, and before kings and rulers.
These are the words of the Lord Jesus Christ, spoken by His own mouth. The commandments contained in this book are from him. They are given to us (His servants) in our weakness and in our language so that we can understand.
He wants us to have the opportunity to right our errors.
He wants us to receive instruction so that we can learn wisdom.
He chastens us to give us the opportunity to repent.
If we are humble, he will make us strong and bless us with power from on high, and give us revelations when we need them.
He was merciful and gave Joseph Smith power to translate the Book of Mormon.
He gave Joseph and others power to lay the foundation of this church, and to bring it out of obscurity and darkness.
The Lord is pleased with the church collectively. What can we do individually to gain the Lord’s favor?
The Doctrine and Covenants wasn’t just for the early Church membership. It is particularly relevant to us now.
How does the Lord warn us today?
What has He warned us about recently? (President Oaks conference talk)
What does it mean to establish the Lord’s righteousness?
What can you do individually and as a family to help bring the Church forth out of obscurity and darkness?
Why is it important for us to be valiant servants in today’s world?
